Fuel-cell bus.

The fuel-cell was much talked about more than 40 years ago . . .
(and how it would revolutionise vehicular transport)

It seems though that it is much older:-

The first references to hydrogen fuel cells appeared in 1838.

The stumbling block seems to be how to produce hydrogen economically.

“More energy is needed to isolate hydrogen from natural compounds than can ever be recovered from its use,”

To a certain extent I feel the same about vehicles that rely on electricity from the mains which has to be stored in batteries before being used to power the wheels.
Unless you have a source of 'green' electricity (such as hydro) I don't believe that the sums add up.

We need to know 'whole life' costs (likewise for nuclear power) before we commit.

I can, however, see the benefit of hybrid power for city use to reduce pollution.
