Commer TS3 gearbox

Hello everybody !


I'm one (Belgian) part of 'oilyracer', a 2 man club....the other part is resident in Bradford, Leeds
We spend most of our free time building vintafakers, vehicles build out of old abandoned parts, trying to give them a second more racy -ish live.
For our newest project I bought an old Commer TS3 two stroke diesel engine out of an old bark in Scotland. Unfortunately the gears were totally altered
for maritime use and not reparable.
Does anyone of you maybe know if that TS3 gearbox was used on other types of lorries or is there another brand/type of gearbox that fits on the TS3 engine? Or even better ...does anybody knows one laying around somewhere?
It would help us a lot!!

Your project sounds interesting - please keep us informed and post pictures if possible.

I would have thought that a gearbox from a Commer 'Knocker' truck would fit your TS3 engine - or possibly any Commer or Karrier from that era.

Have you 'saved' the gearbox input shaft?

That could be significant in determining whether the replacement gearbox will fit.

You might be able to swap the input shaft if there is a difference.

Of course you will need a suitable clutch bell-housing.

Hello again,


Yes i still have the broken gearbox and the intake shaft is one of few things which isn't fiddled with.
It is sticking out from the point where the gearbox housing is touching the bell housing about 250 mm and it's diameter is 38 mm.

The spigot diameter (the smooth bit that sits in the crankshaft) is an important dimension.

The splined shaft engages with the clutch discs and you could change the clutch to suit a different gearbox spline, but you would still need the gearbox spigot to fit into the crankshaft.

The spigot diameter is 20mm and it's 25 mm long.
It is a possibility to change the clutch but the downside is that the starter motor is mounted on to the bell housing ....
Wouldn't it be better to keep the existing clutch and bell housing?
