Question Do you know the name of this Bedford TK engine?

Hello all,

I have just joined Truck & Bus Forum today and am opening this thread because since my childhood I have been a enthusiast of Bedford TK (in Turkey) model and have been wondering what is the exact name of the engine they used because they sound much different than the British TKs, have a remarkable idle sound, etc. I probably have taken a look at more than 100 videos on YouTube but couldn't find the engine I search for.

Hopefully I found 2 videos from those models that use the engine I am wondering about. Then I contacted with Vauxhall and let them listen those sounds and they told me that the engine could be the one made by Leyland, which was an option at that time. But that still didn't satisfy me as they couldn't state an exact name.

So can you please also take a look those 2 videos and let me know if you have any ideas what is the name of this engine?

1st video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3b_nY1b1Tzw (the sound is audible throughout the entire video)

2nd video: https://youtu.be/iW3CqIwXt1U?t=4s (the idling sound is audible between 4th and 6th seconds, video starts from 4th second)

It would be really appreciated if you can help me out.
Thanks in advance.

Detroit Diesel - two-stroke V6 diesel (6V53 or maybe 6V71)

First of all you can forget the Detroit Diesel engines, as, although they were used in later TKs this was as a spin-off from their use in Australia and New Zealand as well as from the larger TM range.
From the earliest TKs the smaller ones were powered by Bedford 6 cylinder 300 cu in petrol or 4 cylinder 220 cu in diesels or 6 cylinder 330 cu in diesels (all Bedford designs)- the earlier TAs and TDs probably had a 200 cu in diesel.

When Bedford wanted a larger diesel engine to power heavier trucks and coaches they used the Leyland 400 cu in diesel engine until the Bedford 466 cu in engine was designed and built, so it might well be the Leyland 400 engine . . .

The use of Leyland engine was mainly before my time, so definitely before the time of any current Vauxhall employees - and the records are probably no longer available, bearing in mind the demise of Bedford was more than 30 years ago.

Apart from that there were some Perkins 4/99 and 4/108 diesel engines used in the vans but not, as far as I know, in the trucks.

Of course, as many Bedford trucks were assembled 'locally' from kits of chassis and body parts shipped 'Completely Knocked Down' (or CKD), then it is possible that locally sourced power plants might have been fitted (which was how the Australian 'mongrels' evolved).

Thanks for the reply. However I have taken a look at the engines you mentioned but they don’t really sound like the Bedford model that I am searching for.

Thanks for the detailed response. I actually find it quite mysterious because the Turkish TK models don’t really sound like any other TKs elsewhere. So it is probably not the original Bedford/Vauxhall engine and as I am sure about that Turkey didn’t have an own engine manufacturer at that time (actually still doesn’t), it is probably an engine made by either Leyland or Perkins or maybe Cummins? But it is interesting how am I not able to find a video of it on YouTube? And if you have listened to these sounds, do you have an idea what can it be?

I did wonder because I thought the TK chassis was too narrow for the Detroit V engines but it sounded quite revvy, not a bit like the 466 in mine. Maybe just a different exhaust system?

It doesn't really sound like it and I don't think they would use Detroil Diesel engines on Turkey versions. As it is obviously different than the original English TKs, it is probably a Leyland, Perkins or maybe Mercedes made. But I am not able to find the exact name.

There will be an engine number somewhere (which might also be on the registration papers), from which you can identify which (Leyland) engine it is:-
http://www.enginedesk.net/en/diesel/engines/leyl_d/leyland

Bedford built TKs had a plate fixed inside the cab on the LH wheelarch. Of course if the engine has been changed then the details might be wrong.
